Posthumous Recognition...

While his courage and heroism largely and tragically escaped recognition during his lifetime, at long last Varian Fry is beginning to be recognized for his historic contributions. . .

YAD VASHEM RECOGNITION

On February 4, 1996, Secretary of State Warren Christopher planted a tree in honor of Varian Fry, the first American ever to be honored as "Righteous among the Nations'' Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Heros and Martyrs Remembrance Authority, Jersusalem, and in 1998 was one of the few also awarded "Commemorative Citizenship of the State of Israel."

EXHIBIT ON CAPITOL HILL

In July 1996, the Secretary of State again honored Varian Fry at an exhibit on Capitol Hill about Fry's mission in France. The ceremony was attended by Representatives Ben Gilman, Tom Lantos, John Porter and many others.

FRY EXHIBITS TOUR US

Three smaller Fry exhibits, curated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, are traveling to various cities in the US. (See Calendar of Events)

VARIAN FRY FOUNDATION PROJECT/IRC

The Varian Fry Foundation Project/IRC is an educational project of the International Rescue Committee and is dedicated to making Fry's story better known. (See Resources and Foundation)

INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE

The work of the Emergency Rescue Committee and the example set by Varian Fry have been continued by the International Rescue Committee which provides emergency relief to refugees in more than 25 countries and resettles more than 8500 refugees in the U.S. each year.

ASSOCIATION VARIAN FRY - FRANCE

This Association was founded in 1999 in Marseilles, France, with the purpose of public and school education about humanitarian resistance, using aspects of Varian Fry's mission in France as examples whenever appropriate. (See Association - France)

"PLACE VARIAN FRY" IN MARSEILLES

On the initiative of the present U.S. Consul General in Marseilles, Samuel Brock, the square in front of the Consulate was renamed "Place Varian Fry."

CHAMBON FOUNDATION

The Chambon Foundation maintains a Fry-related web site with articles and links to other sites, preserves Fry-related materials, and produces a Fry-related documentary. (See Resources and www.chambon.org/fry.htm )

VARIAN FRY STREET IN BERLIN

The city of Berlin has honored Varian Fry by naming a street leading to the Potzdamer Platz "Varian Fry Strasse".

MEMORY TOUR IN FRENCH PROVENCE

Small-group guided week-long tours are available, recalling, among other WWII related events, Fry's mission in and around Marseille. For details see MEMORY IN THE PROVENCE.
